LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety says the state is on track to have the fewest number of traffic fatalities in 66 years.

Office administrator Fred Zwonechek said Tuesday there have been 54 deaths on Nebraska roads this year. That's well below the January-to-May total of 82 deaths in 1944, when there was a record-low 166 for the year. tow parts, tow parts, tow parts, tow parts, tow parts

And the 54 fatalities so far this year is 24% below the 71 deaths reported in the first six months of 2009.

Zwonechek says this year's low number of fatalities is "amazing" considering there are 2.2 million registered vehicles in the state, compared with 700,000 in 1944.
